Four musicians, sharing one common goal, founded the Samsara group in 2001 to bring their diverse musical background together with their passion and knowledge of Indian music and other oriental cultures. The music of the quartet represents the ambition of many artists in the West who are trying to create a musical language in which Western improvisational techniques and their insight into the Indian idiom can be brought together. Most of the compositions, just like in jazz, feature a theme but the improvisations and the whole musical texture is interwoven with structures, elements and ideas of Indian Ragas or Arabic Maqams. The accents and the harmonies are also jazz-like, but sometimes bringing up shades of contemporary and even repetitive music. It would be easy to label the music of Samsara as world music or world jazz, but the intense training of each one of the members in Indian and other forms of oriental music would perhaps not justify this categorization. It is just music, with all its intense beauty and creativity.
